So on the heels of my last entry and my reference to what happened to books, what’s happening to music? The decision by the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council to censor the Dire Straits song, “Money For Nothing” by removing the word “faggot” is about as disturbing as it gets. I am not hesitant at all to include the word “faggot” in this post just like I didn’t hesitate to use the word “nigger” in my last posting. Apparently, I am insensitive and politically incorrect. Right! A guy born without arms, labelled a cripple and forced to endure years of insults by puny brains doesn’t have a clue what sensitivity is at all. So, I guess it’s time to change my approach.
From now on, whenever I see a written reference to “hands” in the print media, I will file a defamation lawsuit against the publication. Anytime I hear a reference to “arms” in a song on the radio, I will lodge a complaint to the same Broadcasting Council. Anytime I have a child approach me and ask what happened to me, I’ll file a complaint against their parents to the human rights commission. Anytime someone goes to shake my hand, I’ll kick them in the shins!
Here’s what I want. I want the name of this human being who lodged this complaint and I want to debate them in a public forum about tolerance, diversity, political correctness and dignity. I am not homophobic, not even a little bit, but as indignant as they are at one innocent word, I am truly angry and I have a right as well to complain about this censorship.
Remember, my first career was in radio broadcasting and I took great pride in being a student of music, it’s history and it’s creators. I found it fascinating to see the poetry of lyrics matched to the genius of music composition to create a product of timeless artistry. I became possessed with understanding the stories told, or not. Some songs made no sense at all, like “Jumpin Jack Flash” by the Rolling Stones. Have you listened to the words on the Beattles White Album or anything by Elton John when he was just beginning his career? In fact, as Terry DiMonte of Calgary radio station, Q107 FM said in response to this ban, “Money For Nothing is making fun of all kinds of people, especially homophobes who love to c all some musicans “faggots”. They got it backwards!” Exactly.
I’m pretty sure Mark Knopfler isn’t homophobic as much as Mark Twain was a racist. Censorhip is almost always wrong and especially when historic perspective is applied. Money For Nothing was written in a different time as was Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. The politically correct movement needs to exist because society did need to re-evaluate some of it’s behavior but the nuts have taken over the asylum…yet again. I’m heading to my vinyl collection to dig out my Dire Straits albums and play “Money For Nothing” as many times as it takes to drown out the whining of this loser who got his way when all he had to do was get over himself and get a life!!!!
