Let me begin by telling you how much I believe in people’s beliefs and even more important, how I don’t want this entry to become too negative; it is Christmas time, after all.  Yes, it is CHRISTMAS amongst other events that coincide, but is CHRISTMAS!  Did you see that…it’s CHRISTMAS!!!

Let’s also get something else straight; I am not defending Christianity, per se as I am somewhat reformed in my own belief system.  No, I haven’t found another religion but in the last five years or so, I have found religion itself to be quite confusing.  Read the chapter about this in my book, Alvin’s Laws of Life, for more background on where my religious confusion began in my childhood but to clarify, I am not of the same conviction I used to be but haven’t become an atheist…just confused.  Having said that, let’s make the very short trip to the core of this debate.

Without “Christ”, there would be no “Christ”-Mas…get it!  A significant number of people on our planet believe that Jesus was born on December 25, 0000 (that is a date, right?) and we have collectively been celebrating the event ever since.  I will tell you that I do love Christmas, but my favorite part is the romantic, childlike and poignant elements.  I will admit to using this feeling in my talks…”Why can’t people feel the way they do and do the things they do this time of year all year round?”, etc. and I do think many things happen this time of year that are very important for those in need.  I also think that this time of year can be very depressing and difficult for a significant number as well so this is complicated.

So why has this push to be politically correct become such a big deal?  Because it is!  When the clear minority…minority of people get their way it is yet more proof that the old squeaky wheel theory works.  I promised to not get too negative but it is very difficult because the people driving this “Happy Holidays” agenda drive me nuts.  They get their way because we have become so afraid of appearing prejudiced or insensitive that the majority keep quiet instead of challenging those who claim their motives are simply for the battle of equality.  Really?  They don’t want equal they want special!  Equal says, “I may not believe in Christ, but I’ll get with the program and celebrate along with those who do!”  We have Jewish friends coming for Christmas dinner and they are clearly not believers but they will come over and celebrate the day because that is what good neighbors and friends do!  There was a Calgary school that this year decided to have a “Holiday Concert” and all the performers sang “”Summer” songs and nobody was allowed to make any references to Christ or Christmas…period!  Where is this administration’s backbone?

Anyways, I could go on for a while but because I promised to not get too negative, I’ll simply say this.
